{"id":362,"date":"2012-03-02T14:24:22","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T20:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/?page_id=362"},"modified":"2015-03-11T16:31:40","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T21:31:40","slug":"san-rafel-swell-utah","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/san-rafel-swell-utah\/","title":{"rendered":"San Rafael Swell, Utah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Utah is a wonderland of geologic diversity, and nearly hidden in the south central part of the state is an amazing place worthy of your attention.<\/p>\n<p>The San Rafael Swell can be found about 30 miles west of the community of Green River.\u00a0 This enormous geologic feature measures about 75 by 40 miles and contains countless recreational possibilities.\u00a0 It is bisected east to west by Interstate 70, dividing it into Northern and Southern sections.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2108\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-7-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"San Rafael Swell 7\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-7-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-7.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a springtime visit there, my friend Jeff and I hiked three separate canyons: Chute, Calf and Three Finger.\u00a0 Each of these offered different and fantastic views of Canyon Country.\u00a0 Like the folks who frequent the trails, each had its own personality, charm and challenges.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-661\" title=\"San Rafael Swell 2\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-2-650x487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Swell consists of a massive dome-shaped anticline that was pushed up millions of years ago.\u00a0\u00a0 Since that time, it has been shaped by infrequent, but powerful flash floods.\u00a0 The water has eroded the sedimentary rocks into abundant canyons, valleys and gorges, accentuated by numerous buttes and mesas.\u00a0 The northern part of the formation is drained by the San Rafael River, while the southern portions are evacuated by small creeks which empty into the Dirty Devil River near Hanksville.\u00a0 All water eventually enters the Colorado or Fremont Rivers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2107\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-6-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"San Rafael Swell 6\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-6-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-6.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2106\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-5-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"San Rafael Swell 5\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-5-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-5.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Swell is a magnet to anyone who enjoys the great Southwest outdoors.\u00a0 You\u2019ll find it frequented by hikers, backpackers, photographers, horseback and ATV riders and enthusiasts who love the world of slot canyons, of which there is no shortage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2105\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-4-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"San Rafael Swell 4\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-4-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-4.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you decide to visit the Swell, keep a few things in mind.\u00a0 First, this is a real desert environment; drinking water is in short supply.\u00a0 Make sure to taken plenty with you.\u00a0 Also, the winds on the mesas can be vicious, even at night.\u00a0 Make sure you have everything either tied down, weighted down or stowed away in your vehicle.\u00a0 The winds were so high when we visited that we had to weight my tent corners down with heavy objects, just to keep in from blowing away.\u00a0 Because there was only a thin layer of sandy topsoil, tent stakes were totally useless.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2104\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-3-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"San Rafael Swell 3\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-3-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-3.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend you visit this place.\u00a0 For the moment at least, it\u2019s not on the \u201cA List\u201d of sites to see in Utah, though I expect that to change in the not-too-distant future.\u00a0 The scenery is stunning, the enjoyment factor is off the scale, and I don\u2019t think you\u2019ll ever find a better canyon environment to explore.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-363\" title=\"San Rafael Swell\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/San-Rafael-Swell-650x433.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Utah is a wonderland of geologic diversity, and nearly hidden in the south central part of the state is an amazing place worthy of your attention.
