{"id":2383,"date":"2014-12-27T09:04:24","date_gmt":"2014-12-27T14:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/?page_id=2383"},"modified":"2014-12-27T09:04:24","modified_gmt":"2014-12-27T14:04:24","slug":"glacier-national-park-montana","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/","title":{"rendered":"Glacier National Park, Montana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Park Service is home to almost countless sites: some historic, some remembrances of both the good and bad, but the natural areas are the crown jewels of the system.\u00a0 What I love about the NPS is the fact that I can speak (or write) single-name places and automatically you know what I&#8217;m talking about.\u00a0 Everglades, Zion, Dinosaur, Arches, Canyonlands, etc.\u00a0 Even among this group of amazing places there are some that stand above the crowd, and without question, Glacier is one of them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/glacier-national-park-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2386\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2386\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-3-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"Glacier National Park #3\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-3-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-3.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/glacier-national-park-7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2390\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2390\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-7-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"Glacier National Park #7\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-7-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-7.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sitting on the American-Canadian border in northwest Montana, Glacier encompasses over one million acres of pristine wilderness, is home to over 1,000 species of plants and hundreds of species of animals.\u00a0 Add to that over 130 named lakes and you have a formula for absolute unparalleled wilderness bliss.\u00a0 This is a place that you could explore for many lifetimes and still not see everything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/glacier-national-park-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2384\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2384\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-1-650x406.jpg\" alt=\"Glacier National Park #1\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-1-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Glacier-National-Park-1.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mankind has been visiting Glacier for over 10,000 years that we know of.\u00a0 In more recent years, various Indian tribes have occupied various regions as well; the Blackfeet on the prairies east of the mountains, to the west you&#8217;d find both the Salish and Kootenai who would head over the mountains in search of game animals.\u00a0 Europeans arrived in the area in the 1800&#8217;s looking for pelts and various mineral treasures, and with the completion of the Great Northern Railway in 1891 Glacier became more accessible to all.\u00a0 With pen to paper, President William H. Taft made Glacier the 10th national park in the system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/glacier-national-park-9\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2392\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2392\" with almost countless recreational opportunities.\u00a0 For the hiker, over 740 miles of trails await your exploration.\u00a0 The Going-To-The Sun-Road is probably the best known single feature in the park, but is by no means the only thing worth seeing.\u00a0 You can take guided boat trips, explore the park in historic red buses, take the park&#8217;s shuttle bus, ride horses and hike.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/glacier-national-park-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2387\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Glacier you try to book lodging on-park if possible.\u00a0 They offer several options, all of which put you right in the middle of one of the great wonderlands in America.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re thinking about this option, make sure to book far in advance as they frequently fill up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/travel-log\/natural-areas\/glacier-national-park-montana\/glacier-national-park-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2388\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" you&#8217;ll find 13 different campgrounds offering around 1,000 individual sites.\u00a0 Most sites are first come-first serve with the exceptions of Fish Creek, St. Mary and half of the group sites in Apgar.
