And, in Kentucky where I live Tourism is King.\u00a0 Virtually every little nook &amp; cranny has it&#8217;s appeal, and many places, like Midway are especially worth you while.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1956\" alt=\"Midway #2\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-2-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-2-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-2.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I started going to Midway only a few years ago after my sister Rhonda started working in Lexington.\u00a0 It was a great meeting place, about halfway between there and the state capital, Frankfort. \u00a0I&#8217;d drive to Louisville, spend the night and then rendezvous with Rhonda for lunch at one of the many fine restaurants in Midway.\u00a0 In the light of full disclosure, some of the photos in this Travel Log were taken by my mom, Rose Marie Guy, too good not to use.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1955\" alt=\"Midway #1\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-1-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-1-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-1.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The town itself started out as a disputed parcel of land between John Francisco and the Lexington &amp; Ohio Railroad about the right of way (which ran through his farm) and the usage of surrounding topsoil for fill on the construction of the railway.\u00a0 By using so much of the topsoil,\u00a0 the farm became non-usable.\u00a0 After several months of litigation, the Woodford County Court agreed with Francisco, forcing the railroad to buy his 216 acre farm for $30 per acre.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1957\" alt=\"Midway #3\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-3-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-3-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-3.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The year is now 1835 and the L &amp; O Railroad is the proud parent of a farm with no apparent use.\u00a0 That all changed when railroad executives got the brainstorm of making this area the hub for several lines to converge.\u00a0 It was called Middle-Way and was tasked with being the meeting place of lines from Lexington and Frankfort as well as Versailles and Georgetown.\u00a0 In May, Civil Engineer, R.C. Hunt of the railroad laid out the town of Midway with the streets being named after railroad executives, no egos here.\u00a0 One interesting historical note, Midway was the first town in Kentucky founded by a railroad, whose tracks still bisect the downtown area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1954\" alt=\"Midway #15\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-15-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-15-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-15.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s visitor will undoubtedly find the detour off of I-64 well worth the 5-minute drive from the interstate into this &#8220;trippy&#8221; little town.\u00a0 Offering a wide range of unique and interesting gift shops, restaurants and interesting architecture to study and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1947\" alt=\"Midway #8\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-8-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-8-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-8.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Food-wise, I have two favorites; Wallace Station and Darlin&#8217; Jean&#8217;s Apple Cobbler Cafe.\u00a0 Both offer very diverse menus which won&#8217;t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1943\" alt=\"Midway #4\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-4-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-4-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-4.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to pick one over the other.\u00a0 <a title=\"Wallace Station\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wallacestation.com\/Wallace_Station_Deli_and_Bakery\/Home.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wallace Station<\/a> is a quaint and bustling bakery and sandwich shop with some of the most interesting offerings anywhere.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll have a challenging time picking from such things as: East Hampton Hot Ham &amp; Brie, The Mediterranean Turkey Grill, The Bourbon Trail Triple Crown, and so on.\u00a0 The serve breakfast through dinner, seven days a week, offer box lunches and catering services.\u00a0 This place is good enough to have been featured on The Food Channel, enough said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1944\" alt=\"Midway #5\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1945\" alt=\"Midway #6\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, don&#8217;t think Darlin&#8217; Jean&#8217;s is a second-place finisher to Wallace Station.\u00a0 This is more of a typical sit-in restaurant vs. a sandwich shop, more room, lots of tables and a bit more relaxed.\u00a0 Their menu items are equally diverse to Wallace Station, and I&#8217;ve never had a bad meal there.\u00a0 You can get everything from pizza to potato salad, and it&#8217;s all good.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always found the portions and service to great, plus, if desert is your thing, Darlin&#8217; Jean&#8217;s is it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1946\" alt=\"Midway #7\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-7-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-7-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-7.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve stuffer yourself at one of Midway&#8217;s fine dining spots, take some time to walk around and enjoy the town.\u00a0 There are many awesome gift shops to choose from<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1952\" alt=\"Midway #13\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-13-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-13-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-13.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorites is called the <a title=\"The Damselfly\" href=\"http:\/\/damselflygallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Damselfly<\/a>, a studio setting with tons of artisan pieces from world-class craftsmen and women.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re really lucky, you may even find one of Rhonda&#8217;s custom jewelry pieces in stock to add to your collection.\u00a0 She&#8217;s had several published in Fire Mountain Gems magazine, that should tell you how good she is (brotherly bragging).\u00a0 They literally have something for everyone, you can easily spend an entire day looking over this amazing assortment of various art forms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1948\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehorsegallery.com\/wh\/intro_gallery.php\" target=\"_blank\">The White Horse Collection<\/a>, featuring some of the most beautiful leather, silver and gold items you&#8217;ll find anywhere.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be able to find amazing gifts for the most discriminating person on your Christmas list.\u00a0 Purses, belts, cigar cases, saddles, harnesses, and anything else leather if in this beautiful shop inside a pleasant and inviting atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1950\" alt=\"Midway #11\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-11-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" place.\u00a0 They have music, clothing, jewelry and just about everything thing else Irish.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t go to Midway without stopping in and seeing what is new, a great place to check out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1953\" alt=\"Midway #14\" src=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-14-650x406.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-14-650x406.jpg 650w, http:\/\/western-traveler.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Midway-14.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I could easily go on for hours, trying to give you a feel for this little town, but you really need to go there yourself to fully appreciate how enjoyable it is.\u00a0 If you can schedule it, try to go late in September to catch their annual <a title=\"Midway Fall Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/www.midwayfallfestival.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fall Festival<\/a>, when the streets come alive with food, vendors, music and various demonstrations.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve attended one of these and hope to do so again in the next year
